Summary of Test

ASTM D2256 is a testing standard designed to measure the tensile properties of threads and yarns. This test method is by far the most common specification that is followed for determining the breaking strength, elongation, and energy of threads, yarns, or other single strand textiles.

This is a relatively simple tensile test whereby the material is pulled at a constant rate of speed until it breaks. The specimen can be tested in three different physical configurations: straight, knotted, or looped.

Before conducting ASTM D2256, it is important to read the entire specification in the relevant ASTM publication.

Testing Procedure

  1. Prepare the specimens as described in the method.
  2. Load the sample into pneumatic or manual rope grips. Gauge length (length of thread between grips) is specified in the testing standard.
  3. Start the test the rate specified in the standard until failure.

Tips

  • Make sure your data acquisition is set high because the test is short as thread breakage happens quickly. The recommended sample rate is 1,000 samples per second. This includes load and position measurements.
  • Make sure the thread is lined up evenly between the top and bottom grip. Slight errors in alignment can significantly alter the repeatability. By design, our “V” shaped channel pneumatic grips prevent misalignment.
