How to Perform ASTM D6746 Rubber Green Strength and Stress Relaxation Testing

Home / Testing Standards / ASTM D6746 Rubber Green Strength and Stress Relaxation Testing

Summary of Test

ASTM D6746 covers the testing of tensile properties of Raw Rubber or Unvulcanized Compounds. The specification describes two test methods: A and B. Method A is for the measurement of tensile strength and modulus for Raw Rubber or Unvulcanized Compounds. Method B is for measurement of the stress relaxation characteristics of the same materials. If you are performing this test, you should read the entire specification from ASTM before you begin.

Recommended Equipment

Testing Procedure

Part A

  1. Prepare the sample as specified in the standard.
  2. Load the sample into a pair of tensile grips suitable for the material being tested and attach an extensometer (if being used).
  3. Begin testing by separating the grips at the specified rate, continuing until the sample breaks.

Calculations:

  • Maximum Tensile Stress
  • Elongation at Break
  • Stress at User-Specified Elongation
  • Modulus of Elasticity

Part B

  1. Prepare the sample as specified in the standard.
  2. Load the sample into a pair of tensile grips suitable for the material being tested and attach an extensometer (if being used).
  3. Begin testing by separating the grips at the specified rate, continuing until the specified strain condition.
  4. Hold the position for the desired period of time.

Calculations:

  • Maximum Force
  • Maximum Stress
  • Force after Decay
  • Stress after Decay
  • Percent Stress Decay (Optional)
