How to Perform ASTM E606 Strain-Controlled Fatigue Testing

Home / Testing Standards / ASTM E606 Strain-Controlled Fatigue Testing

Summary of Test

ASTM E606 describes the determination of fatigue properties of nominally homogeneous materials via strain-controlled cyclic loading. Strain-controlled fatigue testing is a unique test method as cyclic stresses and strains can be determined at any time during this test. Note that differences in strain histories other than constant-amplitude alter fatigue life compared with the constant amplitude results.

Before conducting ASTM E606, it is important to read the entire specification in the relevant ASTM publication.

Recommended Equipment

Testing Procedure

  1. Prepare the test specimens. Measure and record the thickness and the width of the reduced section of each specimen.
  2. Place the specimen in the tensile grips ensuring proper alignment and attach the extensometer.
  3. Apply the load at least until failure.
  4. Record total accumulated cycles to failure (and fracture).

Calculations:

  • Relaxed stress or of creep strain
  • Total relaxation or keep
  • Change in the amount of inelastic strain during hold
  • Total number of cycles to failure
  • Cyclic strain hardening exponent
  • Cyclic strength coefficient
  • Fatigue strength exponent
  • Fatigue ductility exponent
  • Fatigue strength coefficient
  • Fatigue ductility coefficient
