How to Perform ISO 29862 Self adhesive tapes – Determination of peel adhesion properties

Home / Testing Standards / ISO 29862 Self adhesive tapes – Determination of peel adhesion properties

Summary of Test

Pressure sensitive tape is used in a variety of applications including duct tape, electrical tape, masking tape, packaging, double-sided tape, bandages, medical devices, and other uses. ISO 29862 includes four different methods and two annexes (Annex A & Annex B) for testing the peel adhesion strength; the force required to peel a strip of adhesive tape from a specified substrate at a specified angle and speed.

Prior to conducting ISO 29862, it is important to read the entire specification in the relevant ISO publication. ASTM D3330 is a comparable standard to ISO 29862.

Testing Procedure

Method 1 – Self adhesive tapes – Measurement of peel adhesion from stainless steel at an angle of 180 Degrees

  1. Adhere the specimen to the stainless steel testing plate.
  2. Secure the peel fixture to the lower adapter on the testing machine. The loose end of the tape will be secured in the top grip of the machine. When the test is started, the upper grip will pull the end of the specimen off of the testing plate at 180 degrees.
  3. Record the force required to peel the adhesive tape continuously from the plate (adhesive strength).

Method 2 – Self adhesive tapes – Measurement of peel adhesion from its own backing at an angle of 180 Degrees

  1. Prepare the specimen by folding at one end, adhesive to adhesive to form a tab.
  2. Tape the other end of the specimen to the testing plate.
  3. Secure the peel fixture to the lower adapter on the testing machine. The specimen tab will be secured in the top grip of the machine. When the test is started, the upper grip will pull the end of the specimen off of the testing plate at 180 degrees.
  4. Measure the force required to peel the adhesive tape continuously from the backing of a second piece of the same tape (adhesive strength).

Method 3 – Self adhesive tapes – Measurement of peel adhesion of double sided and transfer tapes at an angle of 180 Degrees

  1. Prepare the specimen by applying a length of double sided or adhesive transfer tape to a standard plate with the non-tested surface covered by polyester film.
  2. Secure the peel fixture to the lower adapter on the testing machine. The loose end of the double sided tape will be secured in the top grip of the machine. When the test is started, the upper grip will pull the end of the specimen off of the testing plate at 180 degrees.
  3. Measure the force required to peel either face of the double sided or transfer tape continuously from the plate (adhesive strength).

Method 4– Self adhesive tapes – Measurement of adhesion of the liner to an adhesive tape at an angle of 180 Degrees

  1. Adhere a length of double sided adhesive to a suitable panel. If a single sided adhesive tape is tested, use a double sided adhesive tape to adhere the single sided adhesive specimen to the test panel.
  2. Secure the peel fixture to the lower adapter on the testing machine. The free end of the tape liner will be secured in the top grip of the machine. When the test is started, the upper grip will pull the end of the specimen off of the testing plate at 180 degrees
  3. Measure the force required to peel the liner continuously from the adhesive surface (adhesive strength).
