How to Perform TSO-C69c Puncture Resistance Testing

Home / Testing Standards / TSO-C69c Puncture Resistance Testing

Summary of Test

Federal Aviation Administration TSO-C69c is a standard for ensuring the safety and puncture resistance of inflatable emergency evacuation slides, rafts and ramps used for airplane passengers. The materials used must be tested to show quality and applicability for emergency evacuation.

There are a number of strength and adhesion tests specified in TSO-C69c. The following only applies to the puncture strength test. In order to perform the puncture strength test, a universal testing system with a penetration probe fixture as specified in Figure 1 of TSO-C69c is required. Prior to conducting TSO-C69c, it is important to read the entire specification in the relevant publication.

Recommended Equipment

Testing Procedure

  1. Clamp the fabric tightly in the specimen holder to present a wrinkle-free surface and prevent slippage during the test.
  2. A puncture probe with shape conforming to Figure 1 of TSO-C69c should be driven into the fabric at a rate specified in the standard.

Calculations:

  • Verify that the maximum puncture force exceeds 67 lbf
