Two researchers have made a breakthrough in constructing electronic devices that eventually break down and dissolve away, opening the door for new kinds of medical implants and reducing the amount of waste produced by discarded electronics. In their initial research, John Rogers of the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign and Fiorenzo Omenetto of Tufts University struggled with metal being left behind after the rest of the device had dissolved.
