ASTM B769 | Metals | Shear Testing
ASTM B769 is a testing standard that covers the double- shear testing requirements of wrought and cast aluminum alloy products.
This method determines the shear stress required to fracture the specimen, that is, the shear strength. A universal testing machine that conforms to the requirements of Practices E4 should be used to conduct this test. The double-shear test fixture should have holes with a radius of no more than 0.013 mm (0.0005 in). Prior to conducting ASTM B769, it is important to read the entire specification in the relevant ASTM publication.
Testing Procedure
- Cut and prepare the cylindrical test specimens as described in the standard.
- Mount the specimen into the double-shear fixture with the appropriate specimen orientation and direction.
- Apply load at a crosshead speed not exceeding the limits found in the testing standard.
- Continue test to specimen failure. Results will be calculated by MTESTQuattro.
