ASTM D1623 | Foam | Tension Testing
Rigid Cellular Foams are used in many industries to replace higher weight materials while maintaining an adequate quality of tensile and compressive strength. The Aerospace, Automotive and Construction industries use rigid performance foam for insulation and as structural material. ASTM D1623 provides three sample options. Type A test samples are used when samples are large enough to form the appropriate shape. Type B is used for smaller samples of rigid cellular foam. Finally, Type C would be the preferred test method for measuring tensile adhesion. Each specimen type requires its own specialized fixture. - Measure the sample and calculate the cross-sectional area.
- Mount the sample in the sample specific grip assembly.
- Align grips for uniform testing.
- Begin tensile test at the appropriate speed based on the suggested rate.
- Once sample breaks record ultimate tensile strength and other calculations.
