ASTM D4833 | Textiles | Puncture Testing
The ASTM D4833 test method determines the index value of the puncture resistance of geomembranes, geotextiles, and related materials. A universal testing machine (tensile/compressive testing) can be utilized to meet the requirements of this specification. The test specimen is clamped between two plates of a ring clamp while a force is exerted against the center of the geomembrane by a steel rod until rupture occurs. Often materials that are tested on ASTM D4833 are also analyzed to D76, a specification for using tensile testing machines on textiles.
Before conducting ASTM D4833, it is important to read the entire specification in the relevant ASTM publication.

- Prepare the test specimens as described in the method. Minimum specimen diameter is 100 mm (4 in). Requirements for ASTM D4833 puncture fixture can be found under Recommended Equipment.
- Select the load range of the testing machine so that rupture takes place between 10 to 90 percent of the full-scale load.
- Center and clamp the specimen between the two holding plates of the puncture fixture.
- Apply the force at the crosshead speed specified in the standard until material ruptures.
- Record the maximum force as the puncture resistance force. If there is a double peak, record the initial force value even if the second peak is higher than the first one.
