ASTM D5884 | Textiles | Tearing Strength
ASTM D5884 is a test standard that uses the tongue tear method to determine tear strength. The test specimens are flexible geomembranes that have an internal textile reinforcement. A Universal Testing Machine which can pull at a Constant Rate of Extension (CRE) is required as well as the necessary grips to secure the sample.
Prior to conducting ASTM D5884, it is important to read the entire specification in the relevant ASTM publication.
ASTM D5884 | Textiles | Tearing Strength
- Prepare ten test specimens as described in the standard, paying attention to the alignment of the fiber reinforcement within the geomembrane. A 3 in. cut is needed at the center of each sample.
- Specimens should be conditioned and tested at standard atmospheric conditions.
- Secure the test specimen into the grips by clamping the center of each “tongue” formed by the cut in the sample.
- Apply the tensile force at a constant crosshead speed of 2 in/min and plot the force necessary to tear the sample by the specified distance.
