ASTM D6484 | Composites | Compression Testing
ASTM D6484 is a test method used to study the compressive properties of a composite laminate that has a hole cut into it. A specialized fixture supports the faces of the laminate to prevent buckling while a load is applied in shear. The only acceptable failure is at the location of the hole. This test method allows for more precise composite laminate designs for structural components that may include fastener holes.
Before conducting ASTM D6484, it is important to read the entire specification in the relevant ASTM publication.

- Prepare and condition the test specimens according to the geometries and guidance described in the test standard.
- Measure and record the specimen’s width, thickness, hole size, and hole location.
- Insert the specimen into the support fixture according to the procedure described in the test standard. Ensure that bolts are torqued to specification.
- Determine the Test Method (A or B) required, and load the specimen into the test machine with the proper fixturing in place. Install extensometers, if required.
- Apply load to the specimen at the specified rate prescribed by the test standard, and record all force and displacement data.
- Continue the loading until the specified failure condition or drop in load is achieved.
