ASTM D7264 | Composites | Bend Testing
ASTM D7264 is a testing standard designed to measure the flexural stiffness and strength properties of polymer matrix composites. This test method includes two procedures; Procedure A: three-point bending test with center loading on a simply supported beam and Procedure B: four-point bending test with two loading points. The two procedures give slightly different property values as the locations of the maximum bending moment and the maximum flexural stress are different.
Before conducting ASTM D7264, it is important to read the entire specification in the relevant ASTM publication.

Note that there are slight variations depending on the type of sample selected.
- Prepare at least five test specimens as described in the standard. Record the width, thickness at the mid-section and the total length.
- Measure the span to the nearest 0.1 mm (0.004 in) if the span is less than 63 mm (2.5 in). If the span is greater than or equal to 63 mm (2.5 in), then measure the span to the nearest 0.3 mm (0.012 in).
- Mount the specimen on the bend fixture. For Procedure A, make sure the loading nose is in the middle of the supports. For Procedure B, make sure the load span is one-half of the support span and that it is symmetrically placed between supports. If a deflectometer is used, orient the tip in the upright orientation and position it under the specimen at the center of the support span.
- Apply the force at a constant crosshead speed specified in the standard. Measure and record the force-deflection data. Measure the deflection by the deflectometer. To calculate the flexural strength, apply load until failure.
Calculations:
- Maximum Flexural Stress per Procedure A and B
- Flexural Strength
- Flexural Stress at a Given Strain
- Maximum Strain per Procedure A and B
- Flexural Modulus of Elasticity
