TAPPI T456 | Paper and Paperboard | Tension Testing
TAPPI T456 is a tensile test used to determine the tensile strength of paper and paperboard products after being saturated with water. The test can be performed in one of two ways, depending on the processing or expected end use of the material being tested. For materials designed to handled and maintain strength while wet, the entire specimen is fully saturated for an extended period of time before testing. Materials not designed to be handled while wet are tested only after a small portion is briefly saturated in water.
Before conducting TAPPI T456, it is important to read the entire specification in the relevant TAPPI publication.

- For materials designed to be handled while wet:
- Prepare and condition the test specimens by immersing the entire specimen in distilled water for the determined time required for saturation. Use blotting paper to remove excess water before testing.
- Insert the specimen into the grips at the specified grip separation and carefully align the specimen in the direction of the applied force.
- Note that the pressure applied to the grip clamping surfaces could play a large role in testing results. Trials may be needed to determine optimal grip pressure for the material being tested.
- Apply load to the specimen at the constant rate of grip separation defined in the standard.
- Continue test until specimen failure, while ensuring that the specimen does not slip in the grips or break within the clamping area.
- For materials not designed to be handled while wet:
- Prepare the test specimens according to the dimensions and guidance described in the test standard.
- Insert the specimen into the grips by looping around the bottom horizontal rod fixture and securing the ends of the specimen in the top grip.
- Raise the water container of the “Finch Wet Strength Device” up to the horizontal rod and immerse the looped end of the test specimen for the specified time period.
- Immediately after wetting the specimen, apply load to the specimen at the constant rate of grip separation defined in the standard.
- Continue test until specimen failure.
- Horizontal rod of “Finch Wet Strength Device” should be wiped dry before each test.
