Summary of Test

ASTM D2261 is a common testing standard for those needing to test fabrics made from Acetate, Acrylic, Cotton, Flax, Nylon, Olefin, Polyester, Rayon, Silk, or Wool. These fabrics may be woven, knitted, or nonwoven. A Universal Testing Machine which can pull at a Constant Rate of Extension (CRE) is required as well as the necessary grips to secure the sample. This test is commonly referred to as a “tongue tear” or “tongue rip” test.

This summary is designed to provide an overview of the test procedure as well as a description of the equipment needed to perform ASTM D2261. Before performing the test, it is critical to read the entire specification from the relevant ASTM publication.

Testing Procedure

  1. ASTM D2261 requires that the strip specimen be prepared with a cut halfway down the longitudinal center. Thus, two tongues are formed.
  2. Secure both tongues in grips that are wider than the tongue width. Pneumatic grips apply a more repeatable grip load than manual vise grips. Sample must be properly aligned to avoid error.
  3. A slight preload may be applied to remove slack but is not required.
  4. Begin the test by pulling at a Constant Rate of Extension.
  5. Stop the test once you have acquired enough data to calculate tear strength. The standard recommends running five specimens per batch.
