Summary of Test

ASTM D3039 is a testing specification that determines the in-plane tensile properties of polymer matrix composite materials reinforced by high-modulus fibers. The calculations that can be derived include ultimate tensile strength, ultimate tensile strain, and tensile chord modulus of elasticity, Poisson’s ration and the transition strain. These values are used to determine the size of structural members, the quantity of reinforcements, and to compute the stress for observed strains.

Before conducting ASTM D3039, it is important to read the entire specification in the relevant ASTM publication.

Recommended Equipment

Testing Procedure

  1. Prepare at least five specimens with constant rectangular cross sections as described in the method.
  2. Place the specimen in the fixture by centering it between the grip interfaces. Make sure that the entire grip length contacts the grip faces when the fixture is closed.
  3. Attach the required strain gauges or extensometers to the mid-span, mid-width location of the specimen. In order to determine the modulus of elasticity, transverse strain should be measured. To determine the Poisson’s ratio, the strain values in both transverse and axial directions should be calculated.
  4. Apply the load at a constant rate until failure. Record load versus displacement (or load versus strain if extensometers are used). If the specimen breaks, record the maximum force and strain. Ambient temperature and humidity should be maintained as constant as possible through the duration of this test.
