How to Perform ASTM F3014 Test Method for Penetration Testing of Needles for Surgical Sutures

Home / Testing Standards / ASTM F3014 Test Method for Penetration Testing of Needles for Surgical Sutures

Summary of Test

ASTM F3014 describes a position-control test method to quantify the resistance force required for a straight or curved surgical needle to consistently penetrate a medium multiple times. The ASTM F3014 standard test method enables manufacturers to evaluate the effectiveness of a surgical needle by quantifying the force required for a surgical needle to puncture a given tissue-like medium. The test procedure is repeated multiple times to measure needle durability during surgical procedures.

Note: ASTM F3014 has been withdrawn, this page now serves as a reference to a test method manufacturers may choose to follow.

Recommended Equipment

Testing Procedure

  1. Utilize the appropriate equipment (static or torsional) to perform the testing procedure depending on whether the needle is curved or straight.
  2. Secure the needle into the appropriate needle-clamping fixture so that the needle doesn’t move.
  3. Check the needle before each puncture to make sure the needle is stable and positioned correctly.
  4. Confirm the entire length of the needle’s point passes through the medium perpendicular to the test medium at a uniform speed according to the standard’s guidelines.
  5. Refer to Table 1 within ASTM F3014 for curved needle’s testing ranges and Table 2 for straight needle’s testing ranges.
  6. Repeat the test procedure for the same needle at least 10 times.
