Summary of Test

ISO 13314 defines a test method to evaluate the compressive properties of porous and cellular metals with a porosity of 50% or more. Properties measured include compressive stress, which is defined as the compressive force divided by the initial cross-sectional area perpendicular to the loading direction, and compressive strain, the compressive displacement divided by the initial height of the specimen.

Other properties such as plateau stress or the arithmetical mean of stresses at standard-specified intervals and energy absorption must be reported. Note that metals outlined in this standard exhibit different deformation behavior than conventional metals. Before conducting ISO 13314, it is important to read the entire specification in the relevant ISO publication.

Testing Procedure

  1. Prepare your test specimen in accordance with the standard, measure and note the initial dimensions including the width, thickness, diameter.
  2. Mount the compression platens and the displacement transducers.
  3. Place the test specimen in between the compression platens. Make sure it is centered.
  4. Apply the compressive load to the specimen at the constant rate of speed defined in the standard.
  5. Record the force vs. displacement curve.
  6. Depending on the properties measured (see all below, including optional calculations), stop the test as specified in the standard.
