Summary of Test

ISO 527-1 outlines test methods to determine the tensile properties such as tensile strength and tensile modulus of plastics and plastic composites. A universal testing machine capable of maintaining constant speed rates is needed to perform this test. Prior to conducting ISO 527, it is important to read the entire specification in the relevant ISO publication. Depending on the material being tested, other ISO 527 parts may be followed.

Testing Procedure

  1. Prepare ISO 527 specimen according to the standard.
  2. Mount the specimen into a pair of tensile grips and attach your extensometer (if required). Note that for Poisson’s ratio measurements, two strain-measuring devices (longitudinal and transverse) are required.
  3. Set up the test to maintain speeds of testing as specified in ISO 527-1, Table 1 (ranging from 0.125 mm/min to 500 mm/min).
  4. Apply tensile load until specimen fractures or until the stress (load) or the strain (elongation) reaches a predetermined value.
