How to Perform TAPPI T811 Edgewise compressive strength of corrugated fiberboard

Home / Testing Standards / TAPPI T811 Edgewise compressive strength of corrugated fiberboard

Summary of Test

TAPPI T811 standard describes the test procedures to determine the edgewise (top-to-bottom) compressive strength of corrugated fiberboard shipping containers for pulp, paper, packaging, or related products to determine the stacking life of these containers. The standard includes information on the testing apparatus, conditioning of test specimens, testing procedures and calculations to measure the edgewise compressive strength.

Before conducting TAPPI T811, it is important to read the entire specification in the relevant TAPPI publication.

Recommended Equipment

Testing Procedure

  1. Prepare the test specimens according to the dimensions and guidance described in the standard.
  2. Place the specimen on the compression platen of the compression testing machine. Ensure it is centered on the platen.
  3. Apply compressive load at the rate defined in the standard.
  4. Record the maximum load, the specimen width, and whether specimen failure occurred.

Calculations:

  • Average maximum compressive load per unit width
