How to Perform ASTM C203 Thermal Insulation Testing

Home / Testing Standards / ASTM C203 Thermal Insulation Testing

Summary of Test

ASTM C203 is a test standard used to determine the strength of block-type thermal insulation. Breaking load and flexural strength can be determined in this test method by either a three-point or a four-point bend test. There are also different procedure options to account for varying specimen types or a user’s test machine capabilities. It should be noted that ADMET test systems are able to accomplish all of the specified procedures.

Prior to conducting ASTM C203, it is important to read the entire specification in the relevant ASTM publication.

Recommended Equipment

Testing Procedure

  1. Prepare at least four samples for testing according to the specification or manufacturer recommendations.
  2. Determine which test method (I or II) is best suited for your material, and configure the bend fixture and span length according to the specifications.
  3. Determine which test procedure (A, B, C, or D) is best suited for your material and machine in order to calculate the correct loading rate as described in the standard. The method of loading during the test can either be strain-rate dependent (A and B), stress-rate dependent (C), or simply a constant rate of crosshead extension (D).
  4. Place the specimen into the bend fixture and apply the load at the calculated rate, while plotting data for both load and deflection.
  5. End the test once the specimen breaks, or the specified maximum strain is realized.

Calculations:

  • Breaking Load
  • Maximum Fiber Stress
  • Stress at a Specified Strain
  • Maximum Strain
  • Flexural Strength (Modulus of Rupture)
  • Flexural Yield Strength
  • Elastic Modulus
