Summary of Test

ASTM D897 is a commonly used standard to determine the tensile strength of metal to metal adhesive bonds. The results of adhesive strength tests are highly dependent on how the bonding process was performed, as well as the environmental conditions of the test. For best results, special attention should be paid to manufacturer recommendations for surface preparation, mixing of the adhesive, the adhesive coating process, curing time, and conditioning.

A universal tensile testing machine with grips designed to fit the test specimen is needed to complete the test procedures. Before conducting ASTM D897, it is important to read the entire specification in the relevant ASTM publication.

Testing Procedure

  1. Prepare a total of ten metal test specimens as described in the standard by bonding two of the specified metal parts together at their flat faces. Care should be taken to ensure the surfaces of the metal specimens are ground flat and parallel and that the pieces were cemented together according to the adhesive manufacturer’s recommendations.
  2. Insert the specimen into the grips of the machine. Grips should be similar to those used in fastener pull out tests.
  3. Apply a load as specified in the testing standard.
  4. Record the maximum load at failure as well as the method of failure as described in the test standards.
