Summary of Test

ASTM D3167 measures the average peel strength or force of an adhesive and its bonding agent by using floating roller fixtures. Other common peel tests that determine adhesive properties are the T-peel, the 90 degree peel test, and the 180 degree peel test.

The floating roller peel test allows a flexible substrate to be peeled apart gently from the rigid substance since they are being pulled apart over a one inch axle. This test is conducted by using a specially designed floating roller peel fixture. The angle of separation is effective so that the test works well for substrates that are not as flexible and are unable to be bent to a 90 degree or 180 degree angle.

While this test may not be applicable for every application, it is very effective at calculating average peel forces. Testing Procedure

  1. Bend the unbonded end of the flexible adhesive perpendicular to the rigid substance and clamp it into the grips.
  2. Insert the adhesive specimen and begin applying the specified load. Conduct the test at a displacement rate specified in the testing standard.
  3. End the test upon specimen rupture or break. Repeat the test with at least five other specimens.
